Pierogi have always been one of my favorite comfort foods, especially on cold and rainy days.
Traditional versions usually rely on a lot of regular cheese and butter, which can be tough if you cannot eat dairy.

That is why I created this dairy free cheesy potato pierogi recipe, so nobody has to miss out on the savory filling and cozy texture.
The dough turns out soft and pliable, while the potato center gets wonderfully creamy without any real milk products.
Pan frying them with sweet, golden onions at the end gives you that classic crispy bite that tastes just like the original.
Why This Recipe Is a Keeper
Crispy and Tender Texture – Boiling then pan-frying gives these dumplings an irresistible golden crunch on the outside and soft filling inside.
Authentic Comfort Food Taste – You get the classic rich flavors of traditional pierogi without using any real milk, cheese, or butter.

Creamy Melted Filling – Stirring dairy-free cheddar into hot mashed russet potatoes creates an ultra smooth and velvety center.
Super Soft Dough – Adding dairy-free sour cream to the flour makes the dough pliable, tender, and very easy to roll.
Here’s What You’ll Need
For the Dough
- 2 cups All Purpose Flour
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1 Large Egg
- 1/2 cup Dairy Free Sour Cream
- 1/4 cup Dairy Free Butter, Softened
- 2-3 tbsp Water, If Needed
For the Filling
- 1 1/2 lb Russet Potatoes, Peeled & Cubed
- 2 tbsp Dairy Free Butter
- 1 cup Dairy Free Shredded Cheddar
- 1/2 tsp Onion Powder
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1/4 tsp Black Pepper
For Serving
- 1 Large Yellow Onion, Thinly Sliced
- 3 tbsp Dairy Free Butter
- 1/2 cup Dairy Free Sour Cream
- 1 tbsp Fresh Chives, Chopped
How to Make It
Step 1
Whisk the flour and salt in a large bowl. Add the egg, sour cream, and softened butter and mix until a shaggy dough forms, adding water 1 tablespoon at a time if it seems dry.
Knead for 3-4 minutes until smooth and soft, then wrap and let it rest for 30 minutes.
Step 2
Boil the potatoes in salted water for 15 minutes until tender, then drain well. Mash them with the butter, and while still hot, stir in the dairy free cheddar, onion powder, salt, and pepper until the cheese melts in. Let the filling cool completely.
Step 3
While the dough rests, melt 3 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply golden and sweet. Transfer to a bowl and keep the skillet handy.
Step 4
Roll the dough out on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thick and cut out 3 inch rounds with a cookie cutter or glass.
Place about 1 tablespoon of filling in the center of each round, fold it in half, and pinch the edges firmly to seal.
Step 5
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the pierogi in batches. Once they float, cook for 2-3 minutes more, then lift them out with a slotted spoon.
Step 6
Return the onions to the skillet over medium heat, add the boiled pierogi, and pan fry for 2-3 minutes per side until golden and crisp. Serve with dairy free sour cream and fresh chives.

Recipe Tips
Melt the Cheese Right Away
Dairy-free cheddar needs plenty of direct heat to melt smoothly. You’ll get the best results if you stir the shredded cheese into the potatoes the moment they are mashed and steaming hot.
If the potatoes cool down even a little bit, the shreds will stay firm and your filling will feel grainy instead of creamy.
Cool the Filling Completely
From my experience, putting warm potato filling onto raw dough makes the dough too soft to handle. The heat softens the dairy-free butter in the dough, which makes it stretch out of shape and tear easily.

I recommend spreading the hot mashed potatoes across a wide plate so they cool down quickly to room temperature before you begin assembling.
Give the Dough Time to Rest
Letting the dough rest covered for the full 30 minutes makes rolling it out much easier. Resting relaxes the flour so the dough does not snap back every time you push the rolling pin.
If you skip this step, the dough will fight you and your pierogi wrappers will end up thick and chewy instead of tender.

Popular Questions
Why does the dough keep shrinking back when I try to roll it out?
This happens when the dough has not rested long enough, which makes the flour tense and springy.
Just cover your dough ball and let it sit on the counter for another 10 to 15 minutes so it softens up and rolls smoothly.
