Gyros have always been one of my favorite street foods to grab on a busy night.
The tender spiced chicken wrapped in warm pita bread makes such a satisfying meal for dinner.

Traditional recipes usually rely on milk yogurt for both the marinade and the sauce, which is tough if you cannot eat dairy.
That is why I made these dairy free chicken gyros with tzatziki, so you can enjoy all that classic flavor without feeling sick afterward.
The sauce stays thick and creamy, and the chicken cooks quickly right in a skillet on the stove.
Why This Recipe Is a Keeper
Ultra Tender Chicken – The dairy-free yogurt marinade tenderizes the chicken thighs, keeping every bite juicy and full of rich Mediterranean flavor.
Classic Creamy Tzatziki – You get that cool, garlic-dill flavor and velvety texture without a single drop of real dairy.

Fast Weeknight Cooking – The chicken cooks in just twelve minutes, making this an ideal choice for busy weeknight family dinners.
Amazing Crispy Char – Searing in a hot cast-iron skillet gives the meat golden, smoky edges just like classic Greek street food.
Here’s What You’ll Need
For the Chicken
- 2 lb Boneless Skinless Chicken Thighs
- 1/2 cup Plain Unsweetened Dairy Free Greek Yogurt
- 3 tbsp Olive Oil
- 3 tbsp Lemon Juice
- 4 Garlic Cloves, Minced
- 1 tbsp Dried Oregano
- 2 tsp Paprika
- 1 tsp Ground Cumin
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1/2 tsp Black Pepper
For the Tzatziki
- 1 cup Plain Unsweetened Dairy Free Greek Yogurt
- 1/2 English Cucumber, Grated
- 1 Garlic Clove, Grated
- 1 tbsp Lemon Juice
- 1 tbsp Olive Oil
- 1 tbsp Fresh Dill, Chopped
- 1/2 tsp Salt
For Serving
- 6 Pita Breads
- 2 Roma Tomatoes, Diced
- 1/2 Red Onion, Thinly Sliced
- 2 cups Romaine Lettuce, Shredded
How to Make It
Step 1
Whisk the dairy free yogurt, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, oregano, paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper in a large bowl. Add the chicken thighs, coat well, cover, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or up to overnight.
Step 2
For the tzatziki, wrap the grated cucumber in a clean towel and squeeze out as much liquid as possible. Stir it together with the dairy free yogurt, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, dill, and salt, then chill until serving.
Step 3
Heat a grill pan or large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Shake off the excess marinade and cook the chicken for 5-6 minutes per side until nicely charred and it reaches 175°F.
Step 4
Rest the chicken for 5 minutes, then slice it into thin strips.
Step 5
Warm the pita breads in a dry skillet for about 30 seconds per side until soft and pliable.
Step 6
Spread each pita with tzatziki, then top with chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, and red onion. Fold and serve with extra tzatziki on the side.

Recipe Tips
Pick the Right Dairy-Free Yogurt Base
You’ll get the best results if you choose an almond milk or cashew milk Greek yogurt rather than a coconut base. Coconut yogurts can leave a noticeable sweet taste that clashes with the savory garlic and dill.
Make sure the container explicitly says unsweetened, not just plain. Many plain dairy-free yogurts still have added sugar that can burn in the pan and ruin your flavors.
Salt Your Cucumber Before Squeezing
From my experience, dairy-free yogurt turns watery much faster than dairy yogurt when it sits with wet ingredients.

My favorite trick here is to toss the grated cucumber with a pinch of salt and let it sit in a strainer for 10 minutes before wrapping it in the towel. The salt pulls out twice as much liquid, which keeps your tzatziki thick and spreadable instead of runny.
Aim for a Higher Chicken Temperature
I recommend letting the chicken thighs reach 175 degrees instead of taking them off heat at the standard 165 mark.
Thigh meat has more natural fat and connective tissue than chicken breasts, and that extra heat breaks it down completely. It makes the meat incredibly tender, juicy, and easy to bite through inside the wrap.

Popular Questions
Which type of dairy-free yogurt works best for this recipe?
An unsweetened, plain Greek-style yogurt made from coconut milk, almond milk, or soy milk will give you the thickest texture.
Just make sure it is completely plain and unflavored, because even a little bit of vanilla will ruin the savory flavor.
